John Deere vs. Husqvarna Comparison: Picking the Best Lawnmower

Lawn mowing is not the most interesting thing to do in the world, especially if you have a very large yard. However, things are much easier if you have a high-quality lawnmower. More precisely, I am talking about a small riding lawnmower or one that you can ride and not push.

The best two brands for lawnmowers are arguably John Deere and Husqvarna. The American and Swedish brand are the go-to choice for lawnmower buyers for several decades, thanks to reliable performance, hi-tech features, and excellent lawnmowing ability. However, even though both brands have excellent products, there are still some differences that need to be taken into account. Here we will take a look at all the differences between Husqvarna and John Deere lawnmowers, and in the end, tell you which one is the best for your needs.

John Deere vs. Husqvarna Features

Both manufacturers offer several different models in their respective portfolio. In this comparison, we will have a look at the best models from John Deere and Husqvarna, as they represent how far has the manufacturer come in terms of technology, performance, and design. Those models are John Deere J170 and Husqvarna YTH24K54.

The Swedish Husqvarna is known for its design and ease of use. It comes with cut adjustment in 6 heights, which is something that most other manufacturers can’t compare with. You can also stop the blades from working while you’re driving, something that also is available only in Husqvarna. The bigger fuel tank is also a nice feature to have, but may not be a big deal breaker.

John Deere J170, on the other hand, has a much bigger cutting width, which makes it a better choice for larger surfaces. It is also faster when compared to the Husqvarna, both when going forward or in reverse, and more powerful as well.

John Deere vs. Husqvarna Performance

Features are nice on paper, but how do these lawnmowers compare in the real world and which one is better? With these two there is no clear answer, but I’ll try to guide through several steps, so you can choose the right one for your needs.

Lawnmowing speed

The John Deere J170 is the absolute winner here. It is much faster in a straight line, has a more powerful engine, and much bigger cutting width. Thanks to this, you will finish the mowing much sooner than with the Husqvarna. There is a small caveat though – the John Deere has a smaller fuel tank, which means that you should have a tube of fuel ready in your garage.

Agility

Another important factor when it comes to lawnmowers is agility. Here, the Husqvarna takes the win thanks to its smaller size, lighter weight, and tighter turning radius. This makes it a much better choice for smaller yards – it is much easier to drive the YTH24K54 in tight areas.

Reliability and Price

Both John Deere and Husqvarna are known for their excellent reliability and should last for a while. This is very important as moving a lawnmower to a mechanic for repair requires a trailer. The price is also very similar between the two, which means that choice comes down only to one thing: for smaller yards the Husqvarna YTH24K54 is the better choice thanks to its excellent agility, while the John Deere J170 is a better choice for larger yards thanks to its more powerful engine and bigger cutting width.
